Soundless by Richelle Mead
Fei lives in a village on top of a big mountain. She is deaf. In fact no one in her village is able to hear anything and it has been like that for years. The society is divided into different classes; the artists, the miners and the homeless. The entire village is bound by this traditional system and no one dare change it. The survival of the village lies in the hands of the township beneath the mountain. In exchange for metals from the mines, the people of the village get food and other materials that they cannot produce themselves because of the infertile land. No one can actually leave the village because of an avalanche that managed to block the only safe way to get down the mountain years ago. One day Fei hears a sound. Her hearing has returned. It's a miracle and things start to change for her. Crisis breaks out in the village when the shipment of food stops coming. Fei and her childhood friend, Li Wei, start to question the system and embark on a great adventure down the mountain to save their people.
"Soundless" was a very entertaining and interesting read. I have honestly never read anything like it before. I enjoyed the universe and setting. I loved the myths and found the entire storyline very intriguing. It was a fast-paced read and a lot of events occurred throughout the novel that simply made it even more special. Some parts seemed too unrealistic to me, but it did not ruin my experience of the novel. I still thought it was good! Although I would have loved it more if the relationship between Fei and Li Wei had been described in further detail and if a greater part of the novel was just about them. I do realize that we mostly follow Fei and Li Wei on their adventure, but their love story is not grand. It's very innocent, which does not mean that it was not beautiful. They did take great leaps of faith for each other. Which truly shows how much they care for one another. I guess, I just would have wished for more passion? Yeah, that must be it.
Some of the great messages of this novel is speaking up against an unfair system. It is about taking risks and believing in yourself even though the stakes are high and your chance of survival is questionable. Moreover, it is about holding on to what you believe in even though everyone around you is against you. It's about hoping for the best! I think that those messages are all very beautiful and inspiring. Fei is a strong and very serious character. She never doubted what she wanted and she kept fighting for her people even when they were fighting against her. Fei is unselfish and she shows so much love and concern for the people close to her. She is an inspiring character - a true fighter.
Go ahead. Pick it up. I'm sure you will enjoy it!
