The Last Hours #1 - Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare
If you don't know, Cassandra Clare is my all-time favorite author. Her work never disappoints me and it always reminds me of how much I love reading. Clare has a way of instantly pulling you into her Shadowhunter-Universe where you begin to feel all the same things as her incredible characters. She also amazes me in the way that she writes and creates characters with so much depth. I have an eternal love for everything Cassandra Clare has ever written!
"The Last Hours" is a new series in the Shadowhunter-world where we encounter some old and new characters. The first book is called "Chain of Gold" and we follow the lives of Will and Tessa Herondale's children, James and Lucie Herondale, along with their good friends Matthew Fairchild, Cordelia Carstairs, Christopher and Thomas Lightwood and many many more! If ever you were a fan of "The Dark Artifices" this is a series for you!
In "Chain of Gold" Cordelia Carstairs moves to London with her mother and brother to save their family's reputation. Here she meets her childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale - and all of their friends. She is introduced to the magical Shadowhunter world in London when demons start to attack the city after years of peace. Cordelia has feelings for James, but must conceal them as he is in love with someone else. In the meantime, the young shadowhunters begin to fight against the demons which are different from the ones they have defeated before. These walk in daylight and poison their victims - with no cure to heal them. Shadowhunters are dying and London is quarantined. The young shadowhunters of London get ready to battle.
I loved reading this novel. It felt special to read about Will and Tessa's children - and also to see them as loving parents. It was amazing to encounter the old characters from "The Dark Artifices" which I have greatly missed. Hearing the story of their children was interesting and I could not help, but compare the children and parents with each other. I love James Herondale. I mean, he is almost exactly like his father, Will Herondale. Just as kind and funny. Lucie Herondale is a talented writer, but is also kind and stubborn in her own way. There are many characters in this novel and I cannot describe them all, but I will say that I loved every one of them. I think their individual stories are exciting and wonderful.
As is typical for Clare's work, there is a great deal of love and pain. This novel was no exception. And that is also why I love her work. I felt so many things reading this novel. I cried and smiled. My heart felt good. I was sad when it ended because I wanted more. I can't wait to read the next instalment and be amazed and hurt and shocked again. This novel has my heart.
