The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers by Sean Covey

I can't believe it took me 4 years to read this book! I bought it while I was on a vacation on Sri Lanka in 2016. Me being me, I had convinced my family to go to a bookstore and I stumbled upon The 7 Habits.... My aunt then told me that she had read it once and that I should get it. And so I did. I started reading some of the first chapters and I enjoyed it, but when school started again I set the book aside. To be honest, I've never read any "self-help" books before so it was new to me. I quickly felt lazy and started turning to my fiction novels again.
Then the whole corona thing happened and I was looking for something to read. I actually hate when I don't finish a book. I own a total of 3 books that I would categorize as "self help" books. I've read the first few chapters of all of them, but never finished one. However, I did finish The 7 Habits...! And that makes me proud. I read one chapter every day, and I loved it.

So basically what this book teaches us are, as the title says, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers. Let me sum them up for you:

Habit 1: Be Proactive - Take responsibility for your life.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind - Define your mission and goals in life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First - Prioritize, and do the most important things first.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win - Have an everyone-can-win attitude.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood - Listen to people sincerely.

Habit 6: Synergize - Work together to achieve more.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw - Renew yourself regularly.

So these 7 habits are not new. They were first introduced by Sean Covey's father Stephen R. Covey who wrote the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Sean Covey basically took his father's book and made it teenage-friendly. At least I think so, I haven't actually read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
You don't need to be a teenager to read this book. It's relevant for all ages and that's what makes the 7 habits so great because they can be taught to anyone. They are important and I do believe they can change someone's life. I've been studying the habits and applying them to my own life. I think a lot of teens already know about the principles that the books teaches us, but oftentimes it's hard to know how to apply them to your own life. What Sean Covey does, is that he explains every habit in a simple and laid-back way. He uses great examples about real life teenagers and famous people to really teach us how the habits work - and what happens when we ignore them. I enjoyed reading these small stories. They were motivating because you start to think - if that happened to them, then I can do this. The examples make the habits relatable and realistic. And that's what this book is. It is very real and the habits should be taught to everyone.
