Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Baz Pitch is Simon's roommate and nemesis. They've had multiple battles and they both know that some day, one of them will kill the other. So when Baz doesn't show up for the first day of their last school year, Simon is worried. And bothered. What if Baz is planning some crazy scheme to kill him?
I truly have so much love and admiration for this novel. It was such an easy and enjoyable read. Exactly what I needed right now! It's been a long time since a book has really captivated me the way Carry On did. The whole storyline and writing is amazing and I was not for a second bored while reading it.
Simon Snow is a great and honest guy. He's always hungry and the way that was portrayed was hilarious. Penny Bunce is extremely smart and loyal to Simon. I adore their friendship.
And then there's Baz and Simon. My god, I love their arguments and sharp comments. Oh, and the story takes place in Britain. I don't know why, but it just makes it better when someone as handsome and charming as Baz throws sarcastic comments at Simon - and then imagine hearing him say it in a British accent.
The universe - the whole world of mages - I love that too. I think Rainbow Rowell did a fantastic job imaging this other world where humans and mages live side by side - I know that isn't uncommon, but as far as I know, Carry On has a different take on it. All mages don't have the same amount of power. It's sad, but very clever. Spells are different sayings and they can go out of style because we humans keep adding new words to our dictionary and stop using others. Mages have to keep up with the language of humans to use spells. I know, it makes no sense when I write about it, but it will when you read the book. Which you should! I was actually pretty hesitant to read this novel because it's been years since I read Fangirl. But thank god I gave it a chance. Carry On reminded me of my love for fiction.
