Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (short review)

Harry Potter is finally back at Hogwarts to begin his second year. He is happy to be with his friends and to learn more about magic. Danger soon arises at the school when a message on a wall reads that the "Chamber of Secrets" has been opened. It reveals that the heir of Slytherin will kill students from muggle families. This creates great fear which is heightened when attacks on students start occurring. Harry, Ron and Hermione begin to investigate who the heir of Slytherin is and how to stop the attacks. Along the way, Harry discovers even more things about himself..

Yet again I am amazed by J.K. Rowling's writing style. She has written a great story in an intriguing and fun way. I found myself laughing out loud and smiling at some points. It was fast-paced and entertaining all the way through. I especially like the way that some dramatic scenes with more action were described in a way that mentioned all the important aspects without unnecessarily long descriptions. It was just right. The story itself was also interesting. I especially enjoyed the way the magical world was described. The different potions and magical tricks were fascinating and I found myself wishing that they could be performed in real life. I wish magic was real.

I like Harry Potter as a character. In this book, we get to know about his doubts about himself. Does Harry Potter actually belong in Gryffindor or should he have been in Slytherin? Could he be the heir of Slytherin? Along the way, he has some great and sweet friends who are always there to support him. I love how involved and concerned Ron and Hermione are. This group of friends stick together throughout the entire book.

Overall, "The Chamber of Secrets" is a great second book in the Harry Potter-series. It's fun, exciting and ends with a good message as Dumbledore puts it:

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
