Becoming Alpha (Alpha Girl #1) by Aileen Erin
Tessa McCaide is unlike others. She has a special talent which has always been a big struggle. Especially in her social life. She has a hard time finding friends since everyone thinks she is a freak. Tessa has a chance to start over when her fathers gets a new job in a different state. Although at a party, Tessa is bitten and her life forever changes.
To me, the main character Tessa, has the same personality as any other main character in a fan-fiction. She likes books, she's lonely, she has a special person in her life and she has a secret. This novel did seem like fan-fiction to me. The writing style reflected it. Tessa is humorous. Although her jokes seemed extremely cliché to me and therefore I mostly just rolled my eyes at them. Tessa McCaide was nothing special to me. She didn't seem real and I had a hard time relating to her.
Tessa's new group of friends seemed loyal, but not realistic either. If you take Meredith, Tessa's new BFF, she's just too perfect and Tessa and her get along well. I get that some people immediately click, but somehow their friendship seemed too unnatural to me. In general, I did not feel like any of the characters were special or great. They were all clichés. Therefore, I do not think, the author has been creative when creating the characters and their personalities.
Throughout the novel, I found many clichés. Take Imogene. She's Tessa's enemy and of course she has been in a relationsship with the guy Tessa likes. It's very typical for characters to have enemies, but seriously. Imogene and her way of looking and being is too uncreative. The clichés were the reason why I could always guess what was going to happen next. I was never surprised or blown away by anything. I feel like more could have been added to the story and more could definitely have been done to make the story more special and not so much of a cliché. Important themes were not dealt with and I could keep going on about what it is missing. However, I could imagine this being a great book for young teenagers. It is definitely an easy-read and fast-paced and therefore very appropriate for young readers who like supernatural stories.
