Lady Midnight - The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare
A few years have gone by since the Dark War where several Shadowhunters were killed. In this new series by Cassandra Clare, we follow the Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn who live in the Los Angeles institute alongside Julian's younger siblings; Livia, Ty, Dru and Tavy. In the Dark War, Emma lost her parents. The Clave said they were killed by Sebastian Morgenstern, but Emma does not believe them. She knows that her parents' death means something and she seeks vengeance. After the war, the Cold Peace was enacted by the Clave. The Fair Folk are no longer protected by the Clave under the Accords. This also means that Shadowhunters aren't allowed to communicate with the fairies or help them. Therefore, Julian's older sister and brother, who are half fairy, were taken away. Helen on Wrangel Island and Mark in the Wild Hunt. A family separated. Then Mark shows up again after 5 years with some other fairies regarding the murders that have been happening in Los Angeles. Julian decides to break the Cold Peace by allowing the fairies presence in the institute, but also by agreeing to help them in order for Mark to return home. Mark stays for the time being, but will he be able adjust to his old life? Years are different in the land of Fairy and Mark has experienced brutal things. He is not the same brother as he was when he left. Meanwhile, Emma and Julian have their own struggles and secrets. Will they be able to keep them in or will they eventually break down?
Oh my god. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book! As you may or may not know, Cassandra Clare is my all-time favourite author. I have loved every single book I've read by her and she sure didn't let me down this time. The writing in Lady Midnight is so beautiful and absolutely captivating. This is one of the things I admire about Clare as an author. She can can make anything sound interesting. I almost wanted to note down everything because there were honestly so many great writing techniques.
This was also an amazing story filled with excitement. So many times I wondered what the meaning was behind everything because not all was given away at first. Waiting was a thrill and the outcome was just perfect. The waiting truly is worth it.
Moreover, we get to know the characters a lot more and I love how different everyone is. They are all interesting characters that you grow to like. I really enjoyed reading about some of the characters from Emma's point of view. She mentions all these details and personal stories about the Blackthorn family and especially Julian who she knows so well. Reading about the love and bond between family, friends and lovers made me realize so much, but it also inspired me.
One of my favourite things about Casandra Clare's books is how much she writes about feelings. Because every time she does it, I feel it too. I love getting to experience the love and hurt, the characters are feeling. It honestly felt like my heart broke at least ten times while reading Lady Midnight. This I just love!
We get to know about several love stories in this series. Especially the love between Emma and Julian. Their love just made me insane. In both a bad and good way. I just kept waiting for something to happen. For Emma to open her eyes to what was right there in front of her! Why couldn't she just trust what she felt in her heart? I was so frustrated. Then things happen and the passion between these two lovers is real. It is so beautifully and magically portrayed. And then the stupid law comes in and has to ruin everything. So typical. However, Emma and Julian are not the only ones suffering because of the Clave.
In general, I just love how human everyone is. Clare has truly created this amazing universe with amazing and inspiring characters that you wish existed in real life. From all the hurt, suffering, loss and love in this book, we are taught how hard life can be. Life is unfair at times and we all carry a weight. Sometimes it can lead us in the wrong direction and other times it can end up being the death of us. Therefore, we must learn to share and be okay with the fact that you are allowed to have people help you. We cannot deal with all the struggles in life alone. Not when there are people who care about you. We must share with these people and let them be there for us. Let them carry some of the weight.
All in all just an incredible book and an extremely thrilling beginning to an upcoming bestseller series!
