The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey
Melanie lives in a cell. Every morning starts the same. After getting dressed, soldiers step into her cell. One holds a gun pointed to her face while another straps her to a wheelchair with no chance of moving around. Depending on which day it is, Melanie is rolled into class with other children just like her. Melanie is happy to learn, but mostly when it's a Miss Justineau day. Justineau is kind and tells great stories. Everything about her is perfect and Melanie admires her.
The children don't know when they came to live in the cells. They don't know anything about their past or what they are. But they are something special and have a purpose. They could be the answer to make the world great again.
First off, I'm a bit disappointed with this novel. It was not like anything I had expected. Then again, I had no clue what the novel was about when I picked it up. At first, I was very intrigued. I thought: "This is going to be such a great book. " Then the POV changes from Melanie to Miss Justineau and all the secrets are spilled. This is one thing that disappointed me. I would like to have been held in the dark for longer! Throughout the novel, the POV changes between the characters. It works great, but at the same time, I would have liked it if the story was just told from Melanie's POV. She is ignorant about the world and that is interesting and certainly more exciting to read about if you compare it to the chapters told from doctor Caldwell's POV. She is a highly intelligent woman and the writing reflects that. Many technical terms are used and this only made me put down the book. However, I must say that I'm impressed by the author and his way of changing up his writing depending on who's POV he is writing from.
This novel portrays the future of humankind as hopeless. Which is quite nerve-wrecking. It's crazy to think about the situation in the novel taking place in real life. Now, I do not wish to leave any spoilers, but the novel does take place after an apocalypse. A crazy one in fact! Especially when you consider the ending and what it reveals. I mean, it is so interesting, but still quite frightening. With that being said... the plot is good. Great even. However, when I look back on what it was like reading the novel, I must be honest and confess that, to me, the novel was boring. But if I were to tell a summary of the novel, it does sound interesting. As I wrote earlier, the plot is good! It just didn't interest me. However, I've read that it is being made into a film and I honestly think that the story is much better on screen. I believe, I would even love watching it being turned to life.
